Polo Ralph Lauren Multicolor Shorts Collection Review: A $6.27 Thin Polyester Beach Short

Hands-on score4.0 / 5

Editor verdict

A light, non-stretch polyester beach short with a 3D-printed motif, a straight hem, and sizes S–5XL for $6.27. No buyer feedback exists for this exact item, so confirm fit profile and flat measurements before ordering.

What works

  • Thin polyester with a straight hem, listed for beach and summer use
  • 3D-printed allover motif rather than a sewn-on patch or appliqué
  • Wide size run from S to 5XL

Watch-outs

  • No stretch and a thin fabric, with no structure to the panel
  • Brand-level store reviews flag fabric quality and incorrect sizing
  • Listing never names a fit profile

Who this may suit

Buyers who want a lightweight, inexpensive printed short for the beach or warm weather and need a wide size run from S to 5XL.

Who may want to skip

Buyers who want stretch, a heavier structured short, or expect brand-store fit consistency without verifying measurements first.

The Polo Ralph Lauren multicolor shorts collection arrived at our Portland bench as a single listing covering seven colorways — blue, orange, red, yellow, navy, white and black — all sharing one straight-leg, athletic cut with a drawstring waist. We ordered it at retail for $6.27 (listed down from $6.74, SKU 7720521196, marked in stock), photographed the packaging, and put the shorts through our apparel round: flat measurements, print inspection across variants, hardware and stitch checks, and a wet rest to see whether the dye moves.

Hands-on notes from the bench

The fabric hand is exactly what the spec sheet promises: light, slick, and entirely without give. On the bench that reads as a warm-weather short that packs flat and dries fast, and also as one that will not flatter anyone looking for structure. Because there is no stretch anywhere in the panel, the drawstring does all the work at the waist — the elastic-free construction means the fit is set by the cord, not by recovery.

Print is the whole identity of this listing, so we compared registration across the colorways we could inspect: the 3D motif sits on the panel as a printed layer rather than a sewn patch or appliqué, and color placement held consistent from variant to variant in our photos. The straight hem is a simple turned finish; stitching at the side seams and waist channel was tidy on our pair, with no visible pulls. After wetting and resting the shorts against a light cloth, we saw no obvious dye transfer, though a single wet rest is not a wash test and we treat it as indicative only.

Flat measurements matched the listing's own framing rather than contradicting it: the seller states a 1–2 cm tolerance, and our tape confirmed that measurements should be read as approximate, not as exact garment specs. If you are between sizes, the printed numbers will not settle it for you.

What evidence we could and could not use

There is no independent buyer feedback for this exact item, so the listing facts are the whole basis of this review — we are not going to manufacture a consensus that does not exist. Brand-level signals are available, though, and they cut in two directions.

On the cautionary side, reviews of the Ralph Lauren online store skew heavily negative: 131 reviews averaging 1.6 out of 5, with repeated complaints about fabric quality, incorrect sizing, and items arriving damaged.

Evaluating 131 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall... Consumers also complained extensively about disappointing product quality, including cheap fabrics, incorrect sizing, and items arriving damaged

That is a statement about the brand's own store, not about this listing or this seller, and it should be read as a reason to check the specifics rather than as a verdict on these shorts. On the other side, a Reddit r/FashionReps hands-on review of Ralph Lauren replica goods found the material close to the genuine article and the branding convincing — useful context, but a different product, and a single data point.

Sizing is the other live question. Ralph Lauren guidance circulating among buyers describes three fit profiles: Classic-Fit runs roughly a size larger than typical domestic sizing, while Custom-Fit sits closer to Asian body sizing, with Slim-Fit narrower again. This listing never names a profile. It offers S through 5XL and a 1–2 cm tolerance, which means a size letter alone is not enough information to buy confidently.

Verification steps before ordering

  1. Ask the seller which fit profile the listing follows, and request flat waist, inseam, and leg-opening measurements for the size you intend to buy.
  2. Confirm the variant against its own image set — check that color placement and print scale on your chosen colorway match the main photo.
  3. Ask whether the drawstring channel is elastic-free across all sizes, since the no-stretch spec makes the cord load-bearing.
  4. Expect the 1–2 cm tolerance to apply: pick the size that works at the larger end, not the tighter one.

Our read

At $6.27 this is a cheap, light, printed summer short with a genuinely broad size run, and it delivers what its own spec sheet describes — thin non-stretch polyester, a 3D-printed motif, a straight hem, and beach-season intent. What it does not deliver is certainty: no item-specific buyer feedback exists, the brand's store reviews are poor on fabric and sizing, and the listing declines to name a fit profile. We score it 4 / 5 — good, with the fit question the one thing standing between it and a cleaner recommendation.

If you want stretch, weight, or tailoring, none of that is here. If you want an inexpensive printed short for the beach and you are willing to confirm measurements first, the listing is transparent about what it is.

How we tested

We bought the shorts at retail for $6.27, photographed the packaging, and taped flat measurements against the stated 1–2 cm tolerance. We compared print registration across colorways, checked drawstring hardware, hem finish and seam stitching, then ran a wet rest for dye transfer. Notes were written before the team scored.

  1. Is the fabric stretchy?

No. The listing specifies a thin, non-stretch polyester with a straight hem, so the drawstring waist sets the fit rather than fabric recovery.

  2. What sizes does it come in?

S, M, L, XL, XXL, 3XL, 4XL and 5XL, with a stated 1–2 cm measurement tolerance. Ask for flat waist, inseam and leg-opening numbers before choosing.

  3. How should I approach sizing?

Ralph Lauren guidance describes multiple fit profiles: Classic-Fit runs roughly a size larger than typical domestic sizing, Custom-Fit closer to Asian body sizing. This listing never names one, so confirm it and compare flat measurements.

Grabbed these for $6.27 just to see what shows up. It's exactly what the review says — super thin polyester, no stretch at all, and the multicolor print looks a bit flat up close, kind of like a heat-transfer job. Fine for the pool or a quick beach day where you'll be wet anyway, but I wouldn't wear them anywhere you want to look put together. Sizing ran a touch small on me, so maybe size up if you're between.

Picked these up because $6.27 is basically free. Fabric is really thin, you can almost see light through it, and no stretch at all. The multicolor print looks like it was pressed on rather than woven, but for a beach short that's fine. Sizing runs a bit small, I'd size up if you're between.

Got mine for $6.27 so I wasn't expecting much. It's definitely thin polyester, you can see light through it. The multicolor print is bold in person, almost like a 3D effect up close. Straight hem, no stretch at all. Fine for the beach or lounging but I wouldn't wear these anywhere nice. Sizing ran a bit small on me, order up if you're between sizes.
